James Bland was a successful African-American songwriter by the end of the 19th century, but died in obscurity, of tuberculois, despite penning such classics as Golden Slippers and Carry Me Back to Ol’ Viginny. The collectively Bland’s songs are marketed on this sheet music as “Great Ethiopian Songs”.
