Parson Johnson’s Chicken Brigade
- Description
-
This song was popularized by minstrel star Carroll Johnson but the cover shows two long-forgotten but important African American vaudeville husband and wife duo, Albert and Mamie Anderson. Known as “southern Plantation Sketch Performers”, they performed an act called “Echoes of de Ole Mississippi”. Albert and Maime were among the first Afircan American husband and wife teams to create their own touring ensemble which was called Lady Arfica. The song itself is a shocking and racist affair dealing with a band of razor- wielding chicken thiefs.
